ABOUT  EMERY BROTHERS

Emery Brothers Ltd

Professional, reputable and experienced building contractors working for domestic and commercial clients in Bath and the surrounding areas.

OUR HISTORY

We are a family-run building contractor located in Bath, established in 1947 by George, Lewis and Brian – the original Emery brothers.

Brian’s son, Rex later took over the running of the business and oversaw some expansion and relocated the business to Darlington Wharf where a new office and joiner shop were built. Rex was joined by his own 2 sons, Julian and Simon in the 90s and retired in 2003.

The company is now owned and operated by Julian and Simon, the 3rd generation of the Emery family and has been trading for over 75 years, building an excellent reputation, and gaining a lot of experience on a range of projects, many of which are famous Bath landmarks including Bath Abbey, The Theatre Royal, Beckford’s Tower and various properties on the Royal Crescent and Great Pulteney Street.

OUR HISTORY

The company has steadily expanded with much of the growth happening in the last 20 years when more ambitious projects were taken on such as the construction of The Egg for the Theatre Royal which opened in 2005.

In 2016, after more than 50 years of trading from our yard in Darlington Wharf, Bathwick, we relocated to new premises in Bathford where we are still based today. These new premises allowed us to cater better for the growing team and be closer to our main storage yard at Ashley near Box whilst still only a short journey to Bath city centre. As part of the move, our joinery shop expanded into the workshop directly behind our office.

In 2018, Emery Brothers started work on our most complex and ambitious project to date, the multi-million pound Bath Abbey Footprint Project. Over 3 ½ years, we repaired the collapsing floor of the Abbey, renovated office and choir practice spaces and built new a museum within 18th-century vaults below the street level, helping to secure the future of the Abbey in the heart of Bath.

APPRENTICESHIPS

Over the years, Emery Brothers has taken on dozens of apprentices across various trades including carpentry and joinery, masonry, bricklaying, and decorating. As well as trades, we have also trained site managers and quantity surveyors. We have a good relationship with Bath College and other nearby educational institutions because we recognise the importance of training apprentices for the future of our business. Each year, we take on up to 4 apprentices across different trades. If you would like to apply for an apprenticeship with us then please get in touch.

SUSTAINABILITY

Throughout our 75 years of trading Emery Brothers Ltd has provided well-paying steady employment to many time-served craftsmen and women from Bath and the surrounding area. We continue to invest in our workforce and community each year as we take on up to 4 apprentices across stone masonry, plastering, decorating and carpentry with most of these apprentices staying with the company for many years and even rising to senior management positions.

As the majority of our work is carried out within 25 miles of Bath we know the importance of building and maintaining good, sustainable relationships not just with local suppliers and subcontractors but with clients and consultants as well.

As the main contractor for the £19m Bath Abbey Footprint Project, a hugely important restoration and redevelopment project for the city of Bath, we helped facilitate and run dozens of site tours for schools, colleges, universities as well as local authority planning departments and local businesses. Sharing the experience of this once-in-a-generation project was so important and allowed us to engage with other stakeholders especially businesses who were disrupted during the construction phase of the project.

With regards to our environmental impact, we have taken a number of steps in recent years to reduce this including;

  • Engaging with BANES council on the rollout of the Bath Clean Air Zone to help update our fleet of vehicles and reduce tailpipe emissions.
  • Our first EV was purchased in 2016 and today they make up over 30% of our fleet.
  • Installing a biomass boiler at our office in Bathford. The boiler is fuelled by briquettes produced from waste material generated by our own joinery workshop. This has greatly reduced our reliance on non-renewable energy to heat our offices and workshops.
  • Installing solar panels and a battery on our office roof in 2018.
  • Continuing our commitment to employ local people and use local suppliers and subcontractors which helps to lower our carbon footprint.
  • Reducing waste – by sending leftover materials generated from projects back to our own storage yard to be reused elsewhere we are helping to reduce the overall amount of waste generated from our work.

We continue to look for ways to make our business more sustainable whilst delivering the quality and value we are known for.
